We see the ploughman’s lunch quite a few times in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies and I can imagine that there were a few of these plates served during Bilbo’s birthday feast. There are many different components that make up a ploughman’s lunch, so feel free to change it according to your preferences. I’ll be posting an easy bread recipe tomorrow so come back to check it out!
Bilbo's Birthday Feast: Ploughman's Lunch
Components:
- Bread
- Cheese
- Pickles
- Scotch Egg
- Pork Pie, recipe here
Ingredients:
Scotch Egg
- 4 – large eggs
- 1 pound – pork sausage meat
- 1/2 cup – all purpose flour
- oil, for frying
- 1/2 cup – breadbrumbs
Directions:
- Take four eggs and place them into a pot of cold water. Cover with a lid and place over medium high heat. Let it boil for 2 minutes and immediately place them into an ice bath. This will help stop the cooking. Leave the eggs in the ice bath until completely cool.
- Carefully peel each egg and gently toss them in the flour to coat. Divide the meat into four each parts. Carefully cover each egg in the sausage, evenly. I find the easiest way to do this is to take a portion of the sausage and flatten it between two pieces of plastic wrap. Place the eggs into the refrigerated, covered, for 30 minutes.
- Heat the oil over medium heat until 350F. Coat each of the eggs in breadcrumbs. Carefully place the egg into the hot oil and fry for 5 – 6 minutes. Let it cool lightly before cutting into it.
