The Breadwinner is a 2017 animated movie, directed by Nora Twomey. This movie was also nominated for Best Animated Film alongside Coco, Boss Baby, Ferdinand, and Loving Vincent. As you probably know or expected, Coco won. Since I started the Oscars movie recipe series a bit late, I still have a few recipes I wanted to post and one of them is this traditional rice dish that we saw in the movie, The Breadwinner.
STORE OWNER:Come inside, boy! I’m not going to deliver, am I? Well then, let’s hear it!
PARVANA: I need a kilo of rice, half kilo lentils and a small amount of raisins.
STORE OWNER: A small amount?
STORE OWNER: Ha ha! Should I go by my imagination?
PARVANA: Yes.
THE BREADWINNER, 2017
This dish was seen multiply times in the film and it caught my attention because it looked very similar to a dish I grew up eating which is a Burmese style biryani. After a bit of research, I found out the name of the dish is Kabuli palaw. It is a traditional northern Afghan rice dish that usually consists of carrots, raisins, spices, lamb, or chicken. I decided not to add meat to this dish because they didn’t mention it in the movie but feel free to do so if you prefer.
This is also my very first time making this dish so please feel free to let me know if I did something wrong or if you have a suggestion on how this should be prepared. I would love to know! Please enjoy!
