EILIS: I’ve been taking lessons.
LAURENZIO: Lessons? Like, in a class? You can do that? Maybe I could teach it.
EILIS: No, no. Diana, who lives in the boarding house with me… She cooked me some spaghetti and made me try and eat it without making a mess.

Brooklyn: Chianti and Garlic Spaghetti
A recipe inspired by the spaghetti scene in the 2015 film, Brooklyn.
Ingredients
- 1 pound - dried spaghetti pasta
- water as needed
- salt and pepper as needed
- 3 tbsp - olive oil
- 2 - garlic cloves minced
- 3 shallots minced
- 3/4 cup - chianti or any red drinking wine
- 20 oz - canned crush tomatoes
- parmesan garnish
- basil garnish
Instructions
- Fill a large pot with water and place over high heat. Bring to a boil and season generously with salt. Boil the pasta until al dente. This will take approximately 7 minutes.
- While the pasta is cooking, heat 3 tbsp of oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Once hot, add the minced garlic and shallots and cook until softened. Add the wine and simmer until reduced to about 1/4 of the original amount.
- Add the canned tomatoes and let it simmer for 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste and serve with grated parmesan and chopped basil.
