On Saturday, May 27th, the doors opened at highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout ride at Disney California Adventure. The lines were reportedly up to five hours long and one hour long for the food. I, sadly, was not able to go to the parks that day but one thing that caught my eye was the Groot bread, or, I Am Bread. It’s one of the hottest things on Instagram right now and I’m been dying to try it.
The recipe I have for today is the original flavor but they also have a cheddar jalapeño version. The Groot bread is delicious and so easy to make. I made this one in a little over an hour yesterday night. Once you have the outline of Groot, you can really get creative and create funny expressions for him. You will find below an outline I quickly drew for my Groot bread. It really helps to use a template but you can easily make the bread without it.
This was so much fun to make and I hope you enjoy it as well!
DCA's Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission Breakout: Groot Bread
Ingredients
- 3 1/2 cups bread flour (15.75oz / 446g)
- 2 tsp active dry yeast
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 cups warm water 110F
- 1 whole egg whisked
- 2 whole pitted black olives
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, stir your yeast, sugar, and water together until combined. Set aside for 10 minutes.
- Stir in the flour and salt until it forms a smooth ball of dough. Cover and set it aside for 20 minutes. Preheat your oven to 400F.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface until it's about 1/4" thick. Place the template on top of the dough. Trim off the excess dough with a sharp knife of pizza cutter. Transfer the dough to a baking tray. Use the trimmings to create Groot's eyebrows. Press the dough down firmly to stick the eye brows down. If it doesn't stick, use a tiny bit of the egg wash to adhere it.
- With a sharp pairing knife, cut lines down Groot's face as well as his mouth. Be sure to only cut down 3/4 of the way deep. You do not want to cut through the dough. Next, cut two slits for his eyes. Insert the two black olives and press them down firmly. With the pairing knife, cut ovals around the olives to create an outline for his eyes.
- Brush the dough with the egg. Bake the bread for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
Notes
- You can create up to two pieces of Groot bread with this recipe. Gather the scraps and roll it into a ball. Let it rest for 15 minutes and repeat the process.
- DCA also serves a jalapeño and cheese version. Top Groot's head with sliced jalapeños and shredded cheddar cheese.
