In the center of the table is a platter of food I don’t recognize: circular pieces of meat wedged between round bread slices. I pinch one between my fingers, unsure what to make of it. Four nudges me with his elbow.
“It’s beef,” he says. “Put this on it.” He passes me a small bowl full of red sauce. “You’ve never had a hamburger before?” asks Christina, her eyes wide.
DIVERGENT
It’s been quite a week and I’m desperately yearning for the weekend. These burgers are definitely a sight for sore eyes and I’m so thankful I still have most of the ingredients left to make myself a burger this weekend! For today’s recipe, I have burgers from the Divergent series. In the book and movie, they only served buns, burger patties, and ketchup but I really wanted to dress it up. Feel free to change and adjust to your preference! Please enjoy.
Divergent: Dauntless Burgers with Onion Rings
Ingredients
- | BURGERS |
- 1 lb - ground beef
- 1 tbsp - oil
- salt and pepper
- 4 - your favorite burger buns
- | TOPPINGS |
- tomato slices as needed
- avocado slices as needed
- ketchup as needed
- 8 - slices thick cut bacon 400F for 15 minutes
- | ONION RINGS |
- vegetable oil as needed
- 2 - large sweet onions peeled and cut into 1/2" rounds
- 1 cup - all purpose flour
- 1 tsp - salt
- 2 tsp - garlic powder
- 1 cup - buttermilk
- 3/4 cup - panko or breadcrumbs
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- To prepare the onion rings, heat about 2" of oil in a saucepan to 350F. Meanwhile, mix together the all purpose flour, garlic powder, salt, and buttermilk in a bowl until smooth. Dip your onions into the mixture to coat. Let the excess drip off and cover with panko or breadcrumbs. Fry the onions rings off in the hot oil until golden brown. Drain on a towel and season with salt. Keep the onion rings warm in a low oven while you prepare the burger.
- Heat a cast iron pan over high heat. Divide the beef into quarters and season with salt and pepper. Shape the beef into patties. Once the pan is screaming hot, add the oil and the patties. Let it cook for one minute on one side and flip. Cook for another 3-5 minutes depending on how you like your burgers.
- Arrange your burgers with the ketchup, burger, and your toppings. It's a hefty burger so a knife might help with the presentation. Enjoy!
