RACHEL: It’s a trifle. It’s got all these layers. First there’s a layer of ladyfingers, then jam. then custard, which I made from scratch, then raspberries, more ladyfingers. Then beef sautéed with peas and onions. then a little bit more custard. then bananas and then I put whipped cream on top.
ROSS: What was the one right before bananas?
Rachel: The beef. Yeah, that was weird to me too but then I thought, “Well, there’s minced meat pie.” That’s an English dessert. These people just put strange things in their food.
FRIENDS, SEASON 6, EPISODE 9
Where has this month gone?! I can’t believe that Thanksgiving is next week! I still haven’t decided on what I’m going for dinner but I’m thinking I can never go wrong with some stuffing, right?
I took a little break at the beginning of November because I went to Disneyland and Wizarding World! It was so much fun and if you’re interested in seeing some photos from my trip, head on over to my Instagram.
So, as I’m sure I’ve mentioned before, there is no Thanksgiving without a few episodes of Friends and the most memorable has to be Rachel’s english trifle that she accidentally combined with a shepherd’s pie recipe. There really is no way to make this recipe any better. It really is what is it. It was extremely hesitant to try it really wasn’t that bad! Ross mentioned that it tastes, “like feet” but I really didn’t hate it. It must say a lot about my standards! Have fun with the recipe and make it for a Friends fan for Thanksgiving!
You really don’t need a recipe to create this dish. Rachel says all the components and order she layered her trifle in. She starts with a base layer of ladyfingers, then jam, custard, raspberries, ladyfingers, beef, custard, bananas, and then top it off with whipped cream.
Friends: Rachel Green's English Trifle
Ingredients
- 8 - ladyfingers
- 1 pint - fresh raspberries cleaned
- 1/4 cup - raspberry jam
- 1 - banana
- 1/2 cup - whipped cream
- | CUSTARD |
- 2 cups - milk
- 1/4 cup - granulated sugar
- 2 tsp - cornstarch
- 1/2 tsp - vanilla extract
- 4 - egg yolks
- | BEEF |
- 2 tbsp - vegetable oil
- 1 - shallot minced
- 5 oz - ground beef
- 1/4 cup - green peas
- 1/2 tsp - salt
Instructions
- Prepare the custard by heating the milk in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk together the yolks, sugar, and cornstarch in a bowl until combined. When the milk just comes to a simmer, stream the hot milk into the yolks while whisking to prevent the yolks form cooking. Return the mixture back to the saucepan over medium heat. Whisk the mixture until it starts to bubble. Strain the mixture into a bowl to remove any lumps. Cover the cream with plastic wrap and chill completely.
- To prepare the mince, heat a pan over medium high heat with the oil. Once hot, add the shallots and cook until soft. Add the beef and break the meat up into small pieces. Season with salt and pepper. Finally add the green peas and cook just until heated through. Take it off the heat to cool.
- Rachel says all the layers she arranged her trifle in. She starts with a base layer of ladyfingers, jam, custard, raspberries, then more ladyfingers, beef, more custard, sliced bananas, and whipped cream.
