2016 was my 9th year attending San Diego Comic Con and while I had an great time, it was definitely very different compared previous years. There were a few very big and obvious changes this year like the overwhelming number of virtual reality experiences and the ridiculous wait times for several popular offsites. Here are my top 3 highlights from this year’s SDCC.
MR. ROBOT OFFSITE REPAIR SHOP
I’ve been obsessing over the USA show, Mr. Robot, starring Rami Malek and Christian Slater and I was so excited when I heard that they were going to be having a popup and VR experience at SDCC. Though the line was slow moving, it was well worth the wait to see Mr. Robot’s repair shop and Elliot’s bedroom. The detail they put into the set was amazing and we were able to touch and peek into every cabinet and drawer in his apartment. I believe the VR clip will be available for the public soon but attendees were able to watch the clip at the offsite or with the cast at Petco Park on Thursday. At the end of the experience, we were led to another room where we were handed a Mr. Robot t-shirt. There was incredible the amount of money the network poured into promoting this show. Mr. Robot advertisement was seen on the taxis, shuttles, and even uber vans. Mr. Robot definitely killed it this year!
WB’s HALL H “FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM” PANEL
San Diego Comic Con is know for their long lines and undoubtedly, the most popular and coveted seat is one in Saturday’s Hall H room. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them started off their amazing panel with the Hogwarts Express pulling up across the large panoramic screens in Hall H. After Eddie Redmayne was introduced, he ran around Hall H passing out Newt Scamander wands to everyone. It was truly an incredible experience when everyone held up their wand to cast a spell. I can’t wait to see the movie!
MARVEL’S HALL H DOCTOR STRANGE PANEL
Marvel was at Comic Con this year and they delivered yet another amazing set of panels. Marvel introduced the the cast of Black Panther, Spiderman, and Guardians of the Galaxy. My favorite this year was the Doctor Strange panel. After an super fancy smoke and light show featuring the Doctor Strange logo, Benedict Cumberbatch popped up on stage and as expected, everyone freaked out. Cumberbatch also visited those in line the night before to say thank you and to take some photos with fans. Doctor Strange comes out on November 4th!
San Diego Comic Con is extremely competitive but if you ever have a chance to go, I highly suggest taking the trip. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to stand in lines because the convention is huge and jam-packed with activities. The dates for SDCC 2017 was announced a few weeks ago and it was take place on July 19th – 23rd, 2017. Register now to get a chance to attend!
For those who did attend, what were your highlights? Or, if you weren’t able to attend, what would you have liked to see? Leave a comment because I would love to know!
